DIGITAL CERAMICS

The investigation "Digital Ceramics" arises from the observation of the effects of the digital revolution on craft, and its creative and productive systems. Ceramics and the plaster casting technique are taken as the pretext to represent both conceptually and visually the insertion of contemporary techniques in traditional crafts. The speculative exercise is as follows: to pass a 3D model to the ceramic material. This is done by creating laser cut shapes and then making a plaster mold out of them. The plaster mold will be used to cast it with ceramic, resulting in the final piece, identical to the inicial digital model. Experimenting with ways to use digital fabrication in ceramics brings up different possibilities, and insights. In the first place, with regard to the automation of an originally handmade and manual process. What is more valuable? Can both processes perceived as antagonistic be reconciled?

La investigación Cerámica Digital surge en torno a la observación de los efectos de la revolución digital en la artesanía, y sus sistemas creativos y productivos.

Se toma la cerámica y la técnica de moldaje en yeso como el pretexto para representar tanto conceptualmente como visualmente la inserción del mundo digital en la artesanía tradicional.

El ejercicio especulativo es el siguiente: pasar un modelo 3D (digital) al material cerámico.

Esto se hace mediante la creación de matrices con corte láser para luego sacarles un molde en yeso. El molde de yeso se usará para vaciarlo con cerámica, resultando en la pieza final, idéntica a su modelo digital.

Al experimentar con maneras de usar fabricación digital en las cerámicas surgen diferentes intereses, posibilidades y reflexiones. En primer lugar, con respecto a la automatización de un proceso originalmente artesanal y manual. ¿Qué tiene más valor? ¿Se pueden conciliar ambos procesos percibidos como antagónicos?
